In 1959, a young woman traveled to Europe alone as a teenager. This was unusual in a number of ways - a brave young woman pursuing her dreams regardless of social norms and the expectations of others. Her parents set aside money for her to buy a watch in Switzerland since that seemed like a memorable token of a once-in-a-lifetime trip. When she arrived in Zermatt, the opportunity to climb the Matterhorn, a 14,692-foot mountain in the Alps, overwhelmed and inspired her to hire a guide and summit one of the highest peaks in Europe.

It's been more than 60 years, and the woman—now my mother-in-law—has never regretted trading the timepiece for the experience.
